Description

The Amlamar Living Roots Bridge, also known as the Tunnel Living Roots Bridge, is located in the slopes between the villages of Kudengrim and Kudengthymmai in Meghalaya. It can only be accessed on foot and takes around 30 minutes to reach from the Kudengrim village.

This roots bridge is also called a double-decker living roots bridge, but the upper walkway is currently not functional because still “under construction”.It is amazing to think about the time and effort that goes into creating a living roots bridge. It can take decades for the roots to grow and weave together to form a sturdy bridge. It requires patience and a deep understanding of the natural processes involved. Such bridges not only provide a pathway for people to cross, but also a beautiful example of how humans can work with nature rather than against it.

The Amlamar Living Roots Bridge is referred to as a tunnel roots bridge because the roots of the rubber trees are forming an arch-like structure. This creates a tunnel-like effect where the person is walking through the roots, rather than on top of them. This type of living roots bridge is unique as it provides a more immersive experience for the visitors, as they are surrounded by the roots on all sides.

Even though there is no entry fee or parking fee to access that living root bridge from the villages of Kudengrim and Kudengthymmai, it is still important to be respectful of the environment and the local community, to ensure the preservation of the area for future generations to enjoy. It’s also important to be mindful of your impact on the natural environment and to take care not to damage the bridges or the surrounding ecosystem. This can include things like not littering or cutting down trees or plants.
